Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
