The Substance Film
The filmmaker's unflinching commentary tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills in this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, prime time, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the local kids anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, however Chastain succeeds to show Tammy Faye with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4
