Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
