Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
