Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question specific calls made by the official, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
